Integral Molecular Announces Patent Allowance for its Membrane Protein Lipoparticle Technology

PHILADELPHIA–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Integral Molecular, a leader in membrane protein reagents and services, announces the issuance of a key patent protecting its methodology for generating Lipoparticles, which provide highly-concentrated membrane proteins in their native conformation for antibody and drug discovery applications focused on membrane protein targets such as G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), ion channels, and transporters.

US Patent No. 8,158,130, Doms et al., was issued by the U.S. Patent Office on April 17, 2012 to the University of Pennsylvania and represents a continuation of a previous patent describing the composition of Lipoparticles. Additional patents covering the Lipoparticle are pending.

Integral Molecular to Expand its Headquarters at the Science Center in Philadelphia

Integral Molecular Announces Key Patent Issued on Lipoparticle Technology for Deriving High Concentrations of Cell-free Membrane Proteins

The patent, issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, covers the core composition of Integral Molecular’s Lipoparticle technology, a novel cell-free format for deriving highly-concentrated membrane proteins for antibody development, drug discovery, and biomedical research. Integral membrane proteins, such as G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and ion channels, comprise about a third of existing drug targets, and Lipoparticles provide a means of isolating and characterizing antibodies and drugs against these proteins. Lipoparticle technology stems from research conducted at the University of Pennsylvania and published in the journals Science, PNAS, and Journal of Virology.

Integral Molecular Awarded $9.1 Million Contract from NIAID to Map Epitopes on Viral Pathogens using Shotgun Mutagenesis Mapping Technology

PHILADELPHIA–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Integral Molecular, Inc. has been selected to receive a five year, $9.1 million contract from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, to elucidate novel B cell epitopes on the surface of viral pathogens. Integral Molecular’s Shotgun Mutagenesis Mapping technology will be used to identify both linear and conformational epitopes on viral envelope proteins. By helping to define the full range of immunodominant structures on viral pathogens, Shotgun Mutagenesis will facilitate the design and development of improved vaccines against emerging infectious diseases. This is the second NIH award recently received by Integral Molecular for epitope mapping services.

Shotgun Mutagenesis Mapping analyzes hundreds to thousands of variants of a target protein, each variant containing a unique amino acid substitution, to rapidly identify the binding residues that form antibody epitopes. This technology is well suited for epitope mapping viral envelope proteins, which usually form complex oligomeric structures and contain post-translational modifications that require expression within mammalian cells to retain their native conformation. Because Shotgun Mutagenesis maps functional proteins directly within living human cells, target proteins do not require purification or extraction from their native environment.
